AHA provider manual pg. 14 under the heading “The ACLS Survey” states:
“For conscious patients who may need more advanced assessment and management techniques: Healthcare providers should conduct the ACLS Survey first.”

If the patient is conscious you cannot advance through the BLS algorithm, (if he is conscious he as a pulse) thus, you would use the ACLS Survey to attempt to ascertain a differential diagnosis and reversible causes of the patient’s condition.

Part 2 of the AHA provider manual pg. 11-16 discusses this in detail.

      Best Regards,
      Jeff

On question 7, it says “A and B are correct”, which means maintaining an O2 saturation value o≥ 94% by pulse oximetry is correct, which is not. ACLS doesn’t say anything anywhere about pulse oximetry. It states a mean ARTERIAL oxygen saturation of 94%. That is not the same as a pulse ox reading. The medic class right before mine has been having issues in internship because that number is stressed so much and they were withholding it from patients during MI’s, strokes and other potentially critical patients if the pulse ox was 94 or higher. In my opinion this is an ACLS issue that needs to be fixed because we can’t measure arterial blood gases in the field.

This is what the 2010 AHA ACLS manual says on page 15 in the table under BREATHING:
-For cardiac arrest patients, administer 100% oxygen
-For others, titrate oxygen administration to achieve oxygen saturation values of >94% by pulse oximetry

      Kind Regards,
      Jeff
