ACLS Certification is required by health care providers working in acute care settings and also by providers of emergency services.
The majority of hospitals and emergency services within the United States require that this certification be obtained through the American Heart Association (AHA).
Don’t be fooled by Non-AHA imitations.
There are a number of ways to obtain AHA approved ACLS certification. Below is a breakdown of what is required and how it can be obtained. Also included are some cautions about online certification.
Attend a local class
- The safest way to obtain AHA ACLS certification is by attending a class in your local area. Many hospitals provide the course at a discount to their employees. You can also check your yellow pages for education facilities that provide BLS, ACLS, and first aid training. The cost of the class usually ranges from $ 150-200.
Ask your education department about opportunities for fee reimbursement or fee assistance. - When looking for a course in your local area, you should make sure to ask if the certification is AHA approved since nearly all hospitals and emergency services in the United States require AHA approved ACLS certification.
AHA approved certification always requires a written exam and hands-on skills station test.
Online Certification:
- You should be very cautious about online ACLS certification. There are quite a number of websites that offer “ACLS Certification” but are not AHA approved. Some may even say “approved by AHA certified physicians” or “AHA physicians recommend this course”. Beware of these sites. Most hospitals and healthcare facilities will not recognize these certifications.
- There are several online courses that are AHA approved and they will say so right upfront. They want you to know they are approved and they will always make that clear.
- AHA does offer an online course or CD called “HeartCode ACLS Part 1.” If
This is the American Heart Association’s self-directed learning program. The cost of Part 1 is $120 and includes CME/CE credits. To complete the AHA ACLS certification, there are two parts to the program. Part 1 is the online or CD-based learning component that allows users to work through the ACLS curriculum at their own pace. Part 2 is the hands-on skills evaluation session usually costs around $50.
Conclusion
ACLS certification is a great way to expand your knowledge base as a health care professional, and it will help prepare you to be ready to perform advanced resuscitation in the healthcare setting. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

My ACLS and BLS certificate expired on March 2016 .. Is there anything that I can do to renew it?!
Jeff with admin. says
You would need to speak with the facility where you work or the testing center where you will take ACLS. Many of them provide a grace period for a renewal. They sometimes allow a card to be expired for up to a month or two before you have to take the full provider course instead of the renewal course. Kind regards, Jeff
Liya says
Thanks for the reply, I renewed my BLS through an agency 65$- attended the class. I am a newly licensed RN in NEWYORK
Charles says
There is not such thing as a grace period for courses according to the AHA. A card that is 1 day past the recommended renewal date is considered expired.
Jeff with admin. says
AHA does not regulate whether or not individual facilities allow someone to take a recertification rather than the full class. A hospital or facility can choose to offer a grace period if they want to. Many do this on a case by case basis. Yes, the card may expire but this does not mean that a facility cannot choose to allow someone to do the recert rather than the full provider course.
Kind regards,
Jeff
prasanth says
surely you can”. you can attend a renewal course on ACLS which is provided by different AHA accredited institute .

If I wish to apply for US medical residency in future, does AHA certified ACLS in international locations carry the same standard as doing one in States?
Jeff with admin. says
If the international location is American Heart Association then I will be accepted here in the United States.
Kind regards,
Jeff

I recertified my BLS and ACLS in December 2015. My card expires December 2017. With new ACLS guidelines coming out, will I need to recertify again before my card expires?
Jeff with admin. says
You will not need to recertify again until Dec. 2017. It would be wise to be familiar with the new guidelines, but your card will be acceptable and prove that you completed the AHA ACLS Provider course within the past 2 years.
Kind regards,
Jeff

Where can i find a list of international classrooms for the acls? I’m not living in the states but i wanna get the ACLS certification and i don’t want to do it online.
Jeff with admin. says
Here is the international class locator located on the AHA website: International Class Locator
Dennis Dey says
Is ACLS recertification different from the original certification? My original certification expired Sep 2015 and I recertified using the site aclsrecertification.com do you think it is legitimate
Jeff with admin. says
If you mean by legitimate that it will be accepted as AHA ACLS training. Probably not. This website aclsrecertification(dot)com along with aclscertification(dot)com give the appearance that they are providing an AHA ACLS certification when they are not. Most hospitals and facilities will not accept anything except a legitimate AHA ACLS provider card and therefore, these “certifications” would not be accepted. Before you get any 100% online certification or recertification, you need to check with your employer or education department to see if they are willing to accept anything other than AHA ACLS provider course card.

Jeff

I have a card that indicates I re-certified on September 10, 2013 and that it expires September, 2015. Does this mean that the card is good to the end of September? Thanks for the help. David
Jeff with admin. says
The card is good until the last day of September 2015.

hi, im new to this site, and i have already done my BLS course in another website called AmericanBLS and im thinking of taking the ACLS for my future career as a being a nurse. does my BLS certification fit your requeq or i have to retake the BLS class at your site before taking the ACLS. i’m looking forward to seeing your reply.
thank you and have a great one!
sincerely yours,
Tran
Jeff with admin. says
There is no requirement to have a BLS certification to complete AHA ACLS Certification. You will have to show competency with BLS skills during ACLS certification, but no BLS certification is required. You do not have to retake BLS prior to ACLS.

Jeff

Hi Jeff, I took my ACLS recertification tests yesterday. Your site was so helpful. I got more from your site than the book. Thank you. Is there any way to have a reminder for your site?
Jeff with admin. says
I’m so glad that the site was helpful for you. At this time, I do not have any way to send reminders. However, you can like the Facebook page and you will get intermittent postings on Facebook. I post a “question of the day” regularly on Facebook and this might be a good reminder.

Jeff

Jeff with admin. says
This website can be used to train and prepare you for AHA ACLS certification. After your training and preparation, you can complete AHA ACLS certification. There is not any way to complete AHA ACLS certification 100% online. Here is where you can learn how to get AHA ACLS certification
Kind regards,
Jeff

hi jeff
please what is the requirement for acls refresher course?
And within what period on expiration of my certificate can i sit for a refresher course
thanks
Jeff with admin. says
Usually you need to have an active ACLS certification to do the refresher course. Sometimes if you have not been expired long the training facility will make an exception. You just need to ask them. There is no set time that a lapse in certification is allowed. Each hospital or training facility usually has their own allowance a lapsed certification.
Kind regards,
Jeff

Hello,
I am an EMT and I want to go for ACLS.
What kind of advice can you give as to prerequisites for getting ACLS?
Things I need to learn and know?
Skills I need to acquire?
Other advice?
It might sound crazy, but I really am interested in doing this certification.
On studying rhythms, what resources should I look at?
Is the AHA ACLS book adequate, or is there more material that would be beneficial?
Some people may ask me “why”. Personally, it is something I want to do. Really enjoy having my BLS certification, and am REALLY enjoying my work as an EMT. Ready to take it to the next level.
Seems like a lot of the information is not really user-friendly to EMT’s and that is probably because of scope-of-practice issues, given that we don’t really handle the meds that Paramedics and EMT-A’s handle. But still, I thought I would ask anyway.
Jeff with admin. says
The only prerequisite that you will need is BLS.
This site should provide you with everything you need to ace the AHA ACLS certification.
Make sure that you use the check list in the download library to ensure that you don’t miss any of the content provided on the website. In the knowledge base, you will find a section on ACLS Rhythm Interpretation. This section will prepare you for all of the major rhythms that you will experience in ACLS emergencies. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Kind regards,
Jeff

Thanks for make this clear. I know my question is not about ACLS, but it has been very confusing for many people (me included), Is CPR for providers course the same as BLS for providers course?. …..Thanks for your help!!!!
Jeff with admin. says
AHA has 2 courses for health care providers.
One is called “BLS for health care providers” and the other is called “BLS for Prehospital Providers.”
For health care providers who need CPR, you would want the “BLS for health care providers” course.
Kind regards,
Jeff

I am very pleased that I purchased this on line course before I took my local ACLS class. The practice questions, code scenarios and rhythm reviews were extremely helpful. It was my first time taking ACLS and so much information to process. I have recommended this site to my coworkers and plan to use it again myself in 2 years before I recertify.
