Once the inclusion and exclusion criteria have been reviewed and the patient remains a candidate for fibrinolytic therapy, the risks and benefits should be discussed with the patient and family. If the patient and/or family give their consent for the therapy, the stroke team should quickly continue with the fibrinolytic therapy protocol. Any hospital that administers rtPA will have a fibrinolytic therapy protocol in place.
All treatments up to this point should have taken place within the 60-minute window of time allowed before rtPA is started. The rtPA should be started within 60 minutes of arrival at the treatment facility.
